7 Beaches in Crete You Can’t Miss (Unless You Want to Regret It… and be judged by YiaYia)

Voulisma Beach Crete

So, you’re headed to Crete, hey? While everyone else is crammed onto ferries bound for Mykonos or Santorini, you’ve got your sights set on something a little more… untamed. Sure… some feel as if you are walking along a coastline made entirely out of broken taverna plates…..BUT… Crete’s best beaches are the kind of places that make you ask why you even bother with shoes… Rugged, raw, and occasionally jaw-dropping, this island’s coastline has no shortage of spots where you can work on your tan (and your sense of superiority). Here are five (7) beaches you’d be a fool to miss. Or so would say, my YiaYia.

1. Elafonisi BeachSouthwestern Crete

Elafonisi is the beach you’ve probably already seen all over Instagram. Pink sand? Check. Water so clear it looks like someone cranked up the saturation? Check. The trick is to get here early enough to claim a spot before the crowds descend like seagulls on a dropped sandwich. But once you’re settled, it’s bliss. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re starring in your own Greek island fantasy. And let’s be real…you are.

2. Balos LagoonNorthwestern Crete

If you’ve got a thing for epic views, Balos Lagoon will probably ruin all future beach trips for you. A journey involving either a dodgy dirt road or a boat trip (your choice of adventure), this lagoon looks like it belongs in a movie. Think white sand blending into aquamarine water, surrounded by rugged hills and the distant outline of Gramvousa Island. Just don’t be surprised if you spend more time snapping photos than actually swimming.

3. Voulisma BeachNortheastern Crete

Wildly underestimated and almost noone will give you this tip on the tourist route but I (reluctantly) don’t gate keep. Called by locals, “The Maldives of Crete”, this is where you get that ridiculous turquoise gradient – almost fake-looking on camera. Think soft white sand, shallow water, and drone shots that instantly go viral.

4. Vai BeachNortheastern Crete

Fancy a beach surrounded by a palm forest? No, this isn’t an Instagram filter, it’s Vai Beach. This spot has the distinction of being home to Europe’s largest natural palm grove, and while that sounds impressive, what really matters is how cool it looks. Vai has a vibe that’s less tourist trap, more “I’ve just discovered paradise.” And, let’s not forget, this place was once a haven for hippies. So if you feel the sudden urge to tie-dye something, we won’t judge

4. Preveli BeachSouthern Crete

Ever wanted to swim in a river and the sea in the same day? Preveli Beach makes that oddly specific dream come true. This hidden gem is where the Kourtaliotiko River meets the Libyan Sea, and the result is a mix of lagoon, river, and beach all rolled into one. Add in a palm forest and a historic monastery nearby, and you’ve got the kind of place where even the most jaded traveler might, just might crack a smile.

5. Matala BeachSouth Central Crete

If you’re looking for a beach with a bit of a backstory, Matala’s your spot. Once a hippie hangout in the ‘60s (legend has it Joni Mitchell chilled here), this beach is now a mix of bohemian charm and ancient history, thanks to the caves carved into its cliffs. And while you’re pondering who used to live in those caves, you can dip your toes into the clear blue waters and watch one of Crete’s best sunsets. Yes, it’s as good as they say.

Oh go on then, one more…

6. Falassarna BeachWestern Crete

Falassarna Beach is the kind of place that makes you question why you ever thought a sun lounger on a crowded beach was a good idea. This western gem is all about wide-open stretches of golden sand, clear blue waters, and sunsets that could make a grown man tear up. It’s a hotspot for windsurfers, so if you like your beach days with a side of adrenaline, you’re in the right place. For the rest of us, there are beach bars and tavernas to keep you well-fed and hydrated while you pretend to consider taking up windsurfing.

The Bottom Line
Crete’s beaches are the kind of places that’ll make you wonder why you ever bothered with anywhere else. From pink sands to ancient caves, these spots have everything you need for a beach day (or week) that will ruin all future vacations. Enjoy, and maybe don’t tell too many people about them.
